Do I Steal? (LD 42; Luke 16:1-13)

We an always redefine the Lord's law to be very easy. We will find that in our definition of the law we are doing pretty well at keeping it out of gratitude. The truth is that we struggle, we fail, and we are called to continually grow in our conformity to God's standard. There are also things that we are called to do in light of God's standard.

Stealing vs Laboring (Ephesians 4:28)

On the one hand it is very easy for us to say that not stealing is pretty easy.  I mean, we might not struggle with literally shop lifting, or maybe we don’t struggle with smashing a window to steal something out of a shop.  If we do struggle with shop lifting it is pretty easy to acknowledge that is sin because the government will punish for such action.  However, how does this law penetrate deeper into the heart?  Where do we all struggle to live out this command?  How do we positively submit to the Lord?

The Absurdity of Honest Business (LD 42; Deuteronomy 25:13-19)

There is a certain wisdom in cheating people out of money in terms of worldly wisdom.  It would seem that we would get ahead and increase our earnings.  We want to believe that if we cheat to get ahead it will not really cost us anything and it will make our business ventures all that much more profitable.  This is not what the Lord would have us do.  The Lord does not see such deceptive practices as honorable to HIm.  In fact, we find that Moses makes explicit that we are not to have two different kinds of weights in our house.  Why is Moses concerned about the Israelites having two sets of weights?  What is the problem of us having a different weight in a bag and a different weight in the house?  How can we use this old standard to learn how to live a pleasing life to the Lord today.

Beyond Stealing (Galatians 6:1-10 (LD 42)

There are many theories on how to manage money.  We could say that we manage it well because we give a lot to the Lord.  The issue is why are we being generous?  Is it because we believe that the Lord will return our money tenfold?  Are we doing it because our conscience has been bound to do so?  Are we doing it because we know that the Lord loves a cheerful giver? These are questions that impact our generosity and how we should value the Lord and the things of the Lord.  Sometimes we try to be generous because we think that our generosity will be rewarded by God rather than because we know our generosity honors the Lord.  So, how do we manage our finances, our lives, and positively strive to be generous for the glory of the Lord? What is involved in our keeping the commandment that requires us not to steal?
