Christ commands us not to divorce. This seems to contradict Moses and not seem to account for abuse. What does Christ mean in the sermon on the mount? How has divorce been abused in Israel? What is Christ positively commanding about marriage?
One of the frustrating things about witnessing Christ’s interaction with the pharisees is their constant attempt to undermine him rather than being instructed by him. The irony of this is that we do learn things from their interaction even though they do not bear fruits of a teachable heart. So, what does Christ teach us regarding the Lord’s intention for marriage?
Christ goes through the law and lays out the challenge of the seventh commandment. This is another commandment that one might think is rather easy to keep, but is this really such an easy command to keep? Is this one of the least commands or do we make it one of the least commands? What are some of the implications regarding this commandment?
So often we use the law of God to find loopholes and technicalities. I think that many times we like the letter of the law because it narrows the sharpness of its requirement. But, how do we order our lives by the law of God when it seems contradictory? For instance Christ gives permission for divorce if there is an adulterous relationship. The Apostle Paul allows for divorce if the unbeliever cannot live with the believer. Yet, Christ states that, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.” How do we reconcile these teachings on divorce and order our lives when they seem to contradict one another?
